Working from a Home Office

Home Offices

Home Offices are no longer consigned to the basement or an unused corner of the living or dining room, at Wiggs we’ve seen home offices emerge as one of the most important new trends that our customers ask about. Mostly thanks to a huge rise in both self-employment and flexible working trends.

Whether people are working for themselves or an employer, an analysis of official figures by the TUC to mark National Work From Home Day reveals that nearly a quarter of a million (241,000) more people work from home offices than a decade ago. And the biggest growth in the trend has been among women with 35% (157,000) more working from home offices in 2015 than in 2005.

The study shows that the number of people working from home has increased by a fifth in the last ten years to reach a record 1.5m people.

With the number of at-home workers on the rise, the need for workspace is constant and evolving with options ranging from integrated or hidden systems to “shedquarters.”

From experience, working from home can be difficult, especially so if you don’t have a designated area for working. The old saying that each room in the house should have a specific purpose – bedrooms are for sleeping and not for working, or kitchens are for eating and not for studying, and so forth. Sounds over the top, but it makes sense. The true essence of your living room can be lost if you are perched on the sofa working every day.

To avoid the blurring of the lines between downtime and work time we’d always advise you set up a specific spot in your home, even if it’s just a corner, where you go and put yourself into work mode only. The rest of the rooms should be reserved for relaxation and entertaining, and you should never see them any other way.

At Wiggs we can build anything from ‘in house’ home offices, making use of clever carpentry to hide the computer and ancillary equipment, all the way through to bespoke Garden Offices that can fit 3 – 4 people in immense comfort.
